Why Play is Important for Children and Adults

At BeWILDerwood, play isn’t just for little ones – it’s for everyone. From building confidence and creativity to boosting wellbeing, discover why play is powerful for both children and grown-ups.

At BeWILDerwood, we see play all day, every day - children running through the woods, imaginations fired up, laughter heard all around. And just behind them? Grown-ups rediscovering the joy of play too.

Play is an essential part of growing up, learning, and even staying happy and healthy (no matter how many birthdays you’ve had).

For Children

Play is how children make sense of the world. Whether they’re turning sticks into magic wands or conquering the wonky wooden bridge, they’re learning every step of the way.

  • It encourages confidence and independence – Climbing the Sky Maze or zooming down a slide teaches children to take risks, try new things, and believe in themselves.

  • It boosts creativity – In a world full of screens, play gives children the freedom to dream big, solve problems, and invent their own magical adventures.

  • It supports brain development – Play strengthens memory, focus, and even language skills, especially when it involves storytelling, and working things out with others.

  • It’s brilliant for physical health – Balancing, jumping, running, swinging – all the fun stuff that keeps young bodies active and strong.

  • It supports emotional wellbeing – Being outdoors, moving freely, and laughing with friends (and the odd Crocklebog) is the perfect recipe for happiness.

For Grown-Ups

We often think of play as something that ends when school does – but it absolutely shouldn’t! Adults need time to let go, be silly, and enjoy the moment too.

  • It helps us relax – Letting loose and having fun outdoors is a brilliant way to shake off stress and reset your brain.

  • It connects us – Playing together strengthens relationships with our children and friends. Whether you’re meeting the BeWILDerwood characters or laughing along the Wobbly Wires, it brings people closer.

  • It sparks creativity – Trying something playful or imaginative gets your brain ticking in new ways.

  • It reconnects us with nature – Being playful in nature reminds us what it feels like to be grounded, curious and alive.
